The purchase and installation of a home comfort system is the beginning of a long relationship between you and your contractor.  Many contractors focus their business on installations and provide service on an "as needed" basis.  They will ordinarily use installers to perform service since they do not have a full-time service department.  These companies do little to keep up with the continuous advance in technology and methods that are designed to save you money.

When you start comparing "apples to apples", don't confuse the apple for the stem.  The apple is what you get after you pay the money.  The stem is the amount of money you pay.  Too often competitive offers are compared using only the price.  Take a close look at the way the company came up with their number.  Did they spend time with you to understand your needs?  Did they analyze your home for exact heating and cooling requirements?  Did they offer you choices and help you understand the pros and cons of each choice"  Did they offer written guarantees removing you from any risk?  Are they tied to a single brand or supplier?  Do they work with the local utility companies to take care of any rebates or other incentives for which you may be eligible?  Have they been in business long enough to prove they will likely stay in business as long as you need them?  Do they take out all required permits and order all necessary inspections?  Are they fully bonded and insured?

If you are unsure about their answers to any of these questions, can you be sure about what they will be doing in your home?  If any of these questions are answered with a "no" should you let them into your home at all?
