Among the thousands of consumer products available, furnace and air conditioners are among the few that Consumer Reports refuse to rate. This is primarily due to the wide range of quality and workmanship that contractors provide. The best furnace in the world is only as good as the way it is installed. Many times a contractor will cut corners to reduce cost with little or no regard for the impact that these measures have on your long term satisfaction. Additionally, many contracting companies are formed by skilled installers or service people who possess little or no business experience or education. The result? Numerous companies who fail - leaving their customers with no warranty when problems arise.
Most of these problems can be avoided by spending time with the representative that comes to you home. Ask questions about the training their installers and service technicians receive. Ask for written guarantees on the installation quality, product quality and your ultimate satisfaction. Don't be afraid to ask about the representative's experience and training. Be sure to purchase your equipment from a company where the owner is still active in the business. Ask to see proof that the company you are considering to hire is focused on your satisfaction and not just the sale. If a company is unwilling or unable to guarantee your satisfaction - in writing - or if they cannot produce proof of long term happy customers, there is probably a good reason.
